Naruto Shippuden is an anime series based on the manga by Masashi Kishimoto. The show has aired since October 3, 2007 and has been licensed in North America by Viz Media and shown on Disney XD. The series tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become Hokage, the leader of his village. Naruto was created by Masashi Kishimoto and weaves around a coming-of-age theme with lots of comedic relief and action in the form of battles between ninja. The series has become immensely popular with many believing it to be the best anime ever created, but is still in its early phases. Naruto is voiced by Iori Nomizu, who is nicknamed 'Nom-chan' after the voice actor for the character. The original Japanese voice actors for Naruto are: Masashi Kishogen (Naruto), Masashi Ebara (Maitencio) and Taro Yamashita (Sasuke). The show was originally created to be a one-shot manga by Kishimoto, but was later turned into an anime series by Studio Pierrot. The show’s production is overseen by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo. The show premiered on the Japanese network TV Tokyo on October 3, 2007. Viz Media has claimed it has sold over 170 million copies in Japan. Naruto is so popular that it has spawned two movies, 17 OVAs, six light novels, four soundtracks, 11 video games including the popular Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series for various consoles, one manga sequel series called "Naruto: Shippuden", which began serialization in February 2007 and one American-made film called "". Kishimoto was also invited to Anime Expo 2008 in Los Angeles to participate in a panel for the anime. The story revolves around the main character, Naruto Uzumaki, who has a dream to become the owner of the "Hokage" title. The Hokage is the leader of Konohagakure known as Konoha for short and is one of the most powerful ninja in that village. Naruto and his friends begin their journey as ninja and must learn all the skills they need to be a resident ninja. As they travel, Naruto encounters several obstacles along with gaining new abilities. Naruto Shippuden is based on Masashi Kishimoto's best-selling manga series which was originally published in Japan by Shueisha in 1999 as a one-shot manga titled "Naruto". The manga began serialization in "Weekly Shonen Jump" magazine in the same year adopting the title of "Naruto". The show was produced by animation studio Pierrot with Masashi Kishimoto himself credited with the original story, character design and chief story supervisor. The actual animation work was done by several different studios including Studio Pierrot, Studio Live, and Studio Gokumi. The music for the series was composed by Toshio Masuda with sound design by Kenji Yamamoto with Studio Pierrot doing the backgrounds.
